First, the envelope for a "Funeral Invitation" -
Now, A funeral invitation in gothic Geman handwriting - by my great-grandfather, Isbrand Friesen. An excellent example of penmanship for such invitations! The occasion of a wedding called for such a fine, handwritten letter too.
This is the back of the same sheet, on which is a list of the relatives in his parents' village. Each home passes it on to the next, so the same invitation is used for all. Notice that the names are written in the English style instead of the Gothic script. Here is another letter from another great-grandfather, David Kroeker, in Mexico, who was writing to his grown children in Canada, about the death of his wife, and their mother.
