Translation of German Gothic Handwriting

Author
Ruth Marlene Friesen - Saskatoon, SK. Canada

Have you got some old letters, diaries or journals of an ancestor that you would like to have deciphered?

Here's some samples of Gothic German handwriting.

Even your parents perhaps, may not be able to read it, or have great difficulty explaining what Great-grandma or Great-grandpa were trying to express on that delicate, brittle paper, or in that old notebook.

NOW YOU CAN HAVE THOSE SECRETS UNLOCKED!!

YOU CAN:

finally know what is written in that old letter or diary
and get a sense of who they really were emotionally and intellectually

perhaps get a critical piece of information in your search for family genealogy and history - something you can announce at your next family reunion. "Ta-Da!! Guess what I found out!"

- put it in your special album with a translation beside or across from it. This will be appreciated years from now by future generations looking for clues to their heritage.

Would you like to know how I learned to read that old German handwriting? Click on Background for that story.

Yes, there are people willing and able to translate German that is printed or typed with Roman (or English) letters, but not nearly so many who can read the old Gothic script, that was used in the handwritten German. I am able to offer this service to you!

I need to INSERT here that I've become VERY busy with other projects and business goals. I don't have time for translation work any more! Sorry! For some time I hesitated to stop this service, because when I started there were only three people online offering this type of translation work, and I was one of them. Now I checked again, and there are a number of others. To help you out I will list some links I found in Google;

How to get it Done:

Send me an email describing what you want translated. I will reply explaining how to estimate the cost, and how to send 50% of that estimate as a retainer. Or, you can send it first, and I'll work out an estimate - then I'll wait for your retainer fee before I begin.

Reach me via this Form for Questions and Comments

Send me a CLEAR PHOTOCOPY of the pages to be translated - by email or by regular post - AND the retainer fee.

When the work is finished I will email it back to you with a bill for the final amount for the fee. That amount is then due immediately. IF you would also like me to mail you a laser printed copy of the finished work, I will send it as soon as I receive that final payment. No extra charge for the mailing!

Payment can be by PayPal, check or money order, and if you have MasterCard, (and can reach me by phone) I can take a MasterCard payment too.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~DO IT TODAY!~~~~~~~~~~~~~
NOTE: the retainer fee is necessary so I don't do hours of work, without getting paid. (Wouldn't you arrange the same protection if you were advertising a service like this?)
BONUS: Sharp, laser printing at no extra cost, if you request the translation to be sent to you by post.
BONUS: Postage for mailing will be my own expense. No charge.
BONUS: If the work turns out to be fairly easy, the handwriting clear, etc., then I am likely to round off the fee and give you a discount.
To summarize - if you send a photocopy of the document, letter, or small diary/ journal notebook, and a 50% retainer you can have that piece translated for .10/word,
you can finally know what it says or means,
understand the writer, perhaps your ancestor!
get a lead for your genealogy or history project,
add to your legacy for your descendants.
If the idea of sending a photocopy by email is too complicated, simply send it by regular post to the address below.
P.S. Incidentally, . . . I understand that people with university degrees may charge up to $1.00/word, and that is still no guarantee that they can work from the handwritten Gothic, so this is a pretty good deal, isn't it?
